Man United’s 20th title seemed like a stroll but was down to hard work

Manchester United’s 20th League title may not have been as spectacular as last season’s triumph for rivals Manchester City but it had a whole different charm about it. To win the title so early in mid-late April isn’t unheard of but after a so finely fought battle last season it must have been very satisfying. To know you not only beat your rivals but you did it so comfortably must go some way to feeling avenged for the trauma of last season’s defeat. The early triumph just illustrates how strong the team is and how deadly they are at winning games.

The current United squad is a fantastic blend of older, established and younger players. Ferguson knows that the squad must constantly evolve to be successful year upon year. The younger players learn from the older players but also challenge the established players to play better in defence of their starting place. As players like Jones and Smalling have been ingrained in the main squad since a young age they improve massively in the United set up. Ferguson has proven again that being dangerous yet consistent is the strongest way to win the title. The players of United deserve the credit that will be heaped upon them. They have a very good backbone but the player that everyone is talking about is Van Persie. His goals have really been the difference between a tight contest last year and such an outright triumph this season. The key to Van Persie’s instant success was that he filled a void so desperately needed by United,  that of a world class striker. Rooney is a world class striker but they needed a no.9 as well to finish that forward line. Ferguson knew this after losing to City on goal difference and clearly vowed for it not to happen again.

The squad Ferguson has at his disposal is incredible. They have had 19 goal scorers in the league this season so far whereas Man City have had only 14 goal scorers. The squad has really chipped in with goals and that matters for form and wins. Too many Manchester City players have underperformed this season while very few have really excelled. Zabaleta has performed well but players like Silva and Nasri have fallen really short this season. Almost the opposite has happened at United though. Players like De Gea and Ferdinand, who recently come under criticism, have been brilliant this year. United are full of battlers. Like Jones, Ferdinand, Carrick, Valencia, Rooney and Welbeck. All of them have fought so hard for the cause where City’s fighters have been lacklustre. United players have that winning mentality installed in them and it shows. Compare that to City, where Mancini frequently blames his players when they lose. He should definitely blame them for their performances but he should do it on the training ground not in front of the camera.

Ferguson’s team battle and fight for every point and with the quality they have in the team they are really unstoppable. They are consistently deadly with Van Persie up front and the drive to take games and win them.
